Real Life History

The Hawaiian fishing industry was shaped by fish markets and fisheries. Many Japanese immigrants that were
skilled commercial fishermen lived in Hawaii and turned to the sea to make
a living. In the early 20th century the fishing industry was widely impacted due to new laws to preserve local fish resources.

Today, annual catch limits are put in place for specific fish or coral for
commercial fisheries on the Hawaiian islands.
